W00T!!

I hate to be cliche' but..

Thank God it's Friday!

It's been tense here at the Asylum this week, with bismal sales and shut-down rumors. If any of you have ever worked in a factory before, you'll know that there's a constant fear of showing up for work and finding the door chained shut. Lately, those rumors have been fueled by management's request that we all "volunteer" to take an extra day off. I had managed to avoid "volunteering" until yesterday. Bossman cornered me and asked if I could be persuaded to take Monday off. I cringed, I can't afford to be short a day's pay, but then he told me something that I still haven't figured out. He said I could use my vacation time.

I don't mind using it, I have three weeks at my disposal, I just don't see how that's going to help save the company money. If any of you smarter, accounting types out there have any idea, let me know. I'm clueless.

So anywho.. Friday is a little sweeter knowing I'm looking forward to a three day weekend.

Is it sad that all I can think about is all the housework I'll get done?

Ya'll enjoy your Friday.

Later Taters!

So, I wonder if they put money aside in accounting to cover vacation time? Or maybe he just wants to not dock you so he's letting you do your 'share' of taking a day off and no one will know you are taking vacation pay? Or he is lying??? Hmmm. Well I'd like a 3 day weekend but yeah, I would miss the pay.

Don't know how your vacation day could help Bossman, unless he didn't want your co-workers to think you were getting special treatment. It must be kind of scary to be worrying about a possible lay-off. I was lucky to be a civil servant the long years before my retirement. They couldn't fire me unless I just didn't do my job or unless they eliminated the job entirely. They couldn't really do that because I was the only one working under my department head, and I was doing his job too while he goofed off a lot.
Enjoy your 3-day weekend! Get out for a while and meet Mother Nature .

Anonymous: I was sort of thinking along those lines too. I'm going to be seriously ticked if I don't get paid for it lol.

bobbie: Back home in Norfolk, most of my friends parents worked on the Navy base. Civil Servant jobs were the Holy Grail of employment back then.

I think I will head out to the woods a little this weekend. There's something about connecting with the earth that keeps your battery charged :)

Yyyyyeaaaah - that doesn't make any sense at all. Accounting-wise, they're still going to pay you. The only way they benefit is that you now have one less day to "take off". Still, six in one hand, half dozen in the other. That's bizarre. Maybe he's smoking crack.

I'm wondering if he didn't misunderstand the GM's instructions, but I specifically asked him.. twice.. if he was sure taking a vacation day would do it and he said yes.

Weird. I don't see how taking a vacation day is going to save them any money either.

tori: Lulu said is has something to do with acruals.. or accruals.. you know.. thingies.

tiff: don't you reckon surgery is sort of going to extremes to get a day off? (I hope it goes well!)

Leave pay comes out of a different pool of money. At least it does around here. ;) Enjoy your looong weekend--hey, it beats having to put up with Bubbles first thing Mon. morning, right?

It's possible that your boss is only responsible for direct labor costs. Benefits (vacation, medical, sick leave, etc.) may be charged elsewhere.

BTW, this is only the second time I've seen the name Mahala. My g.g.g.grand aunt (b. 1804) was named Mahala. Oh . . . and I never met her.

I think what someone above here said -first you mentioned accruals, and then someone said it pertains to different accounts that stuff gets paid out of -the accounting junk. Not sure how that stuff is calculated with respect to social security too but ya know every hour worked, the company has to pay out x-amount towards social security payment, along with what they deduct from us then as well. If you'd have asked about this oh, myabe 36-37 years ago when I was doing programming for the accounting/payroll dept. where I worked then, I probably could have told you how it worked. Been a long time since I've been away from that aspect of employment stuff though.

I'm with you on the TGIF sentiment. If the afternoon dragged on any longer, I'd have been seriously tempted to jump out the window. Lucky you, getting a three day weekend. Enjoy!

I'm clueless as well when it comes to that stuff, but I'm not clueless when it comes to three day weekends! Have fun!

The bottom line to 'paid days off in the midst of shut down rumors' is simple.

If your company shuts down tomorrow, you probably would lose the option for vacation pay. Encouraging employees to take paid time early ensures that, for now, they will be able to 'take' what they have 'earned'.

My company does that too...asking for volunteers to use vacation time and I don't understand it either. I don't have three weeks, so it's not practical for me.

The lawyer in me says get it in writing. Wait, there's a lawyer in me? Oh God, I was hoping for a ballerina or an astrophysicist. Except I don't actually know what an astrophysicist is. Okay, I'm going to stop leaving weird comments now.

My bet is that vacation pay comes out of a different accounting pool then payroll and it makes payroll look smaller, by taking money out of another pool that has already been set asside (acrual accounting anyone?) I'm back from Mickey Mouse land.

That's a scary situation. I hope that you can find a new job soon, even if it means moving back to a city.
