The Hee-Haw county weekly had more news on next month's county fair. Ya'll may remember that it's going to be the first one in over 40 years and people are getting excited. One of the county commissioners was quoted as saying, "We hope to have a big turnout. We could have as many as one thousand visitors at the fair over the weekend."
A thousand? Really? That's the best you can shoot for?
Tickets are $2 per adult, with a max of $6 per car load and free passes will be distributed for the youngins at the elementary schools. Most of the activities are scheduled for that Saturday, including a BBQ competition, molasses cooking (brewing, stewing, making.. whatever the hell you do to molasses) demonstration, farm animal judging and a collection of rides. They're not being very specific about the rides but they did say that it would probably include a Ferris wheel.
Normally, I'd avoid social gatherings on that end of the county like the plague, out of fear that I'll run in to my dad's family, resulting in a Springeresque spectacle, but dammit... I can't keep doing this to myself. I'm turning in to someone I don't recognize. So I'm going. With attitude.

The Pump N' Go is now, once again, open for business. They don't have any gas, but they're expecting a delivery today. Luckily for me, Thelma's dad runs the place so he's going to call us when fuel is delivered. Bossman is going to let me leave long enough to run down there and get enough to last through the weekend. This also means that the Amazon gets to work this weekend, only for one day but it's better than nothing at all.
We can't seem to get a straight answer from the "powers that be" about the cause of this sudden gas shortage. It seems to be centered in Asheville, radiating out to the other areas. There is no shortage in S.C., TN or the eastern part of N.C.

When I was a teenybopper, I saw the movie "Sgt. Pepper's" but I was barely aware that it had anything to do with The Beatles, I just wanted to see Peter Frampton and The BeeGees. I loved that movie, bought the album and nearly wore it out, playing it over and over again. If I'm remembering right (which is never guaranteed,) seeing that movie is what started my friend Mary Lamm's fascination with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. She was never the same after witnessing his crotch grabbing dance moves.
Recently, I saw another movie, a musical based on the work of The Beatles, "Across the Universe." Again, the only reason I watched it was to catch an appearance by Eddie Izzard, performing "Mr. Kite," but I was pleasantly surprised and ended up watching the entire movie three times over the course of a weekend.
Ahh well.. Thelma's dad just called, they delivered the gas and people are already lined up through the middle of town. I guess I'll just wait it out. Good job deciding to go to the fair/festival/thing.
You didn't addle me, Mahala, you just confused me a little. I guess I can't understand anyone not comprehending the genius of The Beatles. I was 22 the first time I heard "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and I screamed like a teeny-bopper. My roommate at the time said they were lousy and they'd never be a success. What an idiot. I have the original album of Sgt. Pepper and I cradle it like a baby!

Hey ya'll, "Across the Universe" just happened to be on Starz last weekend. (Starz being the el cheapo HBO alternative on DirecTv.) I'd not heard of it at all before then. It does have that freaky surreal feel that "Big Fish" had. Check it out if you get a chance :).
Re; the Fair...
When we moved to Mayberry I started working in a 'city' office. They've had a small town festival for years and my co-worker and the Board wanted to make it BIG. So they said we should get rides. I tried to help them out by finding reputable ones but in the end did they listen? Nope. Quick and Easy is what they wanted.
Money exchanged hands, contracts were signed.
We didn't end up with a FERRIS WHEEL but we did end up with a few dilapidated old rusty rides, a couple food vendors operating out of their campers and....
...
...
The fire department, the police and the HAZ-MAT guys out in FULL BODY SUITS when they found the food vendor was slowly dripping out their sewage onto the ground from their indoor potty and then the State Ride Inspector shut down 3 of the 5 rides after they couldn't get them to pass inspection and the one big ride left? A bolt shot out and hit a kid in the neck (lucky not hurt at all and we didn't find out until later.... no problem, just a FYI thing).
Needless to say they didn't use them again... and uh, I heard they went out of business after that.

I was in grade school when they first came across the pond and I was hooked.
I was a sophomore in college when the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan show. Never cared for them much.

Go to the fair and to hell with yo Daddy's kinfolk. You have just as much right to be there as they do. Maybe they're afraid they'll run into you and they won't show up.
Definitely, sometimes no rides, is a good thing.
We've had a gas shortage down here in GA for a few weeks now. Usually by about 2:00 in the afternoon, the stations are empty.
Apparently there was a pipeline that was interrupted during all the hurricanes. They said it would take a few more weeks to get it back up again.
So, does it make me a bod mom that I let the Things watch an Eddie Izzard concert on DVD this weekend? The Eff word was used as liberally as salt on potatoes....and yet, 'cake or death' has now entered the lexicon of 'things you must do at birthdays' so I'm hoping it's not all bad. :)
