Chocolate Gravy and Northern Confusion

To be honest, I'm not all that sure Chocolate Gravy is a hillbilly thing.. or even a Southern one for that matter. I do know I'd never heard of it before we made the great transition from big city life in Richmond, Virginia to life here in podunk central. Oh and by the way, Richmond is part of the South and served as the capitol of the Confederacy. I bring it up because Thelma enjoys calling me a Yankee whenever the opportunity arises and accuses me of "messin' with her" when I explain that although I am from a place north of here, it is not the north.. per se.

I may as well go argue with a fence post. It would get me just as far.

Just for the record, she also once called me a "liberal nazi." I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Anywho, although I've never tried the Southern delicacy called Chocolate Gravy I know it must be really yummy because whenever Lulu mentions it, she pauses, releasing a heavy sigh and her eyeballs roll back in her head. She insists that it must be served with scratch biscuits, not the kind that requires whackin' a can on the kitchen counter and is almost exclusively eaten at breakfast.

Chocolate Gravy

2 cups milk
4 tbsp cocoa
4 tbsp sugar
4 tbsp flour

Slowly heat milk in a small saucepan to just below a boil. In a separate bowl, mix the cocoa, sugar and flour. Slowly add the dry mixture to the milk, mixing with a whisk or fork until thickened. Serve over fresh, hot biscuits.

I'm still waiting for someone to make this for me before I try it on my own. The name "Chocolate Gravy" just seems weird to me. To me, gravy served on biscuits should be gray and lumpy with sausage bits.

Anywho.. ya'll have a good day. We'll talk again soon!

Dessert Biscuits!

Yummy!

I would prefer to dip than pour, but that's just me.

Well, that's a new one on me, and I've been living in the south for 14 or so years. When I was a child (lived in Colorado) I liked to pour hershey syrup on bread and make "chocolate sandwiches".
Chocolate gravy on biscuits just doesn't sound appealing. Maybe waffles???

Anything involving chocolate has got to be a good thing. I might have to try this!

Ok, here's a true test of whether you're a yankee or not. I am 52% yankee according to my results.

ROFL!!! Richmond is SOOOO not the North! Thelma needs a geography intervention. *g*

Mahala. Don't use it on biscuits! Try this instead (much easier). Bake the tube-kind of cinnamon rolls as usual, but underbake a tad. Don't put on the icing. Pour gravy over rolls and stick back in the oven for 2 min. Take out of oven...drizzle icing from cinnamon rolls...nirvana.

Oooo dippin' biscuits. When I get as big as a barn, I'm blaming you Idgie lol.

anon-I thought waffles at first too, but no.. it's a biscuit thing.

terri-I'm a little afraid to take that test lol. When I do, I'll report the results lol.

tori-Remember, this is the same Einstein who thought the District of Columbia was in Canada.

OMG Rachel.. that sounds really good. I love those roll danish thingies.. especially the orange ones.

Oh yeah! I remember that! She seriously needs some geography lessons. *g*

Not sure about chocolate with biscuits - but I wouldn't mind dipping some sugar cookies in that - or maybe some marshmallows!

Yep, I'm with you -- gravy should be gray and lumpy. ;)

Thanks so much for your condolences on the death of my daughter's precious dog. They are much appreciated!

I love both chocolate and gravy - but never the twain shall meet in my mouth!

A liberal, nazi yankee huh? Hmmm! Did this girl finish 5th or 6th grade? Sounds like she definitely never got into studying any thing much about the locales pertaining to the confederacy or the Mason-Dixon line, etc. Hells bells, I AM a Damned Yankee, born and bred north of the Mason Dixon line and I learned the geographic locations of various points of interest with respect to the Confederacy prior to entering 7th grade.
Now chocolate gravy though -that's one I've never heard of. Maybe you could write to Paula "whats-her-name" on the Food network and ask her about this one. I have however heard years back when I was a resident of a state that was considered "southern" -good old Maryland -(ok, it's south of the Mason-Dixon, had several battles fought there, etc.) and some folks I knew who were regulation "Johnny Rebs" from North Carolina talked long and very, very lovingly about eating Country Fried Ham and biscuit with "Red-Eye" gravy. They told me if I ever tried it, I'd never want to eat any other gravy ever again. But I never found a place that served it on their menu. Interesting concept though and the one suggestion to use the packaged cinnamon rolls and put this chocolate stuff on them sounds downright sinfully delicious.

Oooo BetteJo.. sugar cookies sound good.

leigh: I know it's hard. You're in my prayers :)

kenju: awwww c'mon now lol.

jeni: Okay, don't tell anyone this, but I'm not too keen on Redeye Gravy. If the powers that be catch wind of that, they'll run me out of town lol.

Mmmm, biscuits. Gravy. Chocolate. Biscuits in... wait a minute. There's got to be something better than biscuits to put your chocolate gravy over. Ice cream? Waffles? Ice cream plus waffles plus chocolate gravy, mmm.

Note to self: Consider not reading any more blogs until after I give birth.

That's just thin chocolate pudding. That's a weird thing to put on a biscuit, but I'd be willing to try it. I'll eat just about anything with chocolate on it.

I love chocolate gravy. With big, puffy pink hearts.

I skip the biscuits. I like it on toast.
