When In Rome... Or in the Holler

Remember when I said we were going to be eating Beans n' Wienies for the next seven years?

Well, you can forget the wienies.

Remember how I had my heart set on a 2007 Kia, how I had it all worked out so that I could afford the payments?

Forget that too.

All my life I've struggled with my femininity. Remember the show "The Facts of Life?" Growing up I was always Blair on the inside, but Natalie on the outside. To compensate, I've always reached for the frilly, the pastel.. the "girly," but usually had to settle for the plaid, the sturdy.

So what kind of vehicle did I buy yesterday?

It's a 2003 with 48K miles on it. It's got a nice stereo, ac and room in the cab for all three of us. I can haul Ma's scooter chair in the back should the need arise. It's also a 4x4, which I have no farkin' clue how to operate and it's got a tow hitch. With a V8 under the hood, it glides up and over the mountain like it's nothing. When the time comes to replace the big ass mo-hunkin' tires, I'll have to take out a new mortgage on the house.

But it's cute.. right?

I can stick a pretty rose decal on the back window or something.. to make it more girly.. can't I?

Oh and the payments ended up being a little more than I wanted, so keep the new job in your prayers or thoughts.. or say my name as you dance around the bonfire at the full moon. I need all the mojo I can get.

Honestly, I cried half the way home from Big City because I don't need one more bill, but I had to do something. I'm trying really hard to allow myself a little excitement but I have that dread feeling down in my gut. Don't ya'll worry though, it'll pass. I go through this after every big purchase.

Lulu, on the other hand, laughed her hiney off when told what I'd bought.

Lulu: "Now I know what yer a'gettin' for Christmas!"

Me: "What?"

Lulu: "A gun rack!"

Ain't no law that says women can't drive trucks and still be women-y.

Your new truck is strong and stately, powerful and full of purpose. Seems nothin' but women-y to me.

And a rose decal sounds lovely.

Please try to enjoy it - I understand all too well that sinking feeling that it will be more than I can afford - that's why I'm still drivin' a 95VW and can't get out of my own way.

That is a great looking truck. I grew up driving pick-up trucks and kind of miss it. It sounds like it is nice and comfortable and should be good for a couple-hundred-thousand miles with a little care and feeding.

So far as the sinking feeling, I get that to anytime I spend more than $9.95. As you say, it goes away. If you make it through the first 5-6 payments odds are you will live to have it paid for; may it last five years longer then the payments.

Congratulations, you are independently mobile, with something reliable. If you want to run away from home, you have something that will take you there.

Take care,

DG

There's absolutely nothing wrong with driving a truck. Especially since, as you said, you can haul your mom's scooter chair.

'It' needs a name - something to reflect its expensive, pure white, V8 throbbyness. And as for putting Ma's scooter in the back, come on, who you kidding? A motor like that is about 'bugg*r off - don't mess with me cos this is a REAL motor'. How about a wine rack in the back instead?

The truck looks great, kid! Congrats on finding something you like and that you're gonna strive to handle the payments. I can relate on the fear, that gut-wrenching anxiety attack one gets when signing your life away for the next 4-5 years! Hope the new job prospect does pan out for you too. We're all here, pulling and praying away for you. Now, as to a name for the vehicle, my cousin told my daughter the reason she had so many problems with one car she bought was because she gave it a male name. He says cars should always be given female names so think of a nice strong woman's name for the truck and bestow it with love. I think that theory must work as my daughter's last few cars, all with female names, have done much better by her than the red Subaru she had named "Clifford."

Since it's white, it is all feminine to me....LOL

Please tell me you won't be getting a Rebel flag to go with the new gun rack??

It is beautiful Mahala! I seriously thought about a truck when I was shopping in '06. She needs a strong name, written is pink script on the tailgate.

I need a bit of blog help, can you give me a hand?

Yes, definitely name the truck and absolutely a female name. I don't know why either but I like Gertrude also - Gertie when she's being sassy.

Well yay for you! I know it's scary...I was going through a divorce / bankruptcy when my car died and had to be replaced. The payment wasn't what I had hoped either but I'm on 3 years now and still making it!! You'll be fine...you are as strong and beautiful as your truck. Don't know about names..I never named my car...is that a problem????LOL!

I traded in my V4 mazda 626 for a honkin V8 Jeep Cherokee. I still deal with the guilt of not going green but let me just tell you what a difference it is to drive a vehicle with BALLS.

Next SUV I get will be a hybrid. Promise :-)

Girl,

You know I love me a truck. I am so insanely jealous right now!

What a beauty. I on the other hand will continue on with my tiny little commuter car since I have to go drive to big shiny buildings in the city now.

I love trucks!

I cringe at you getting something where the payments were more than you were hoping for. I hope that new job comes through!!! But I LOVE LOVE LOVE trucks.

Fine ride - won't you love the feeling of getting in and the doors actually and all the way shutting? Where did you go on your inaugural drive?
