"Moonlight" - Drive a Stake in it

I have been waiting patiently for weeks to see the premier of the new CBS series "Moonlight." Last Friday night I nearly dismembered the Amazon for not changing the television channel at nine o'clock because I didn't believe her when she said it didn't come on for another week. I couldn't wait, I love those sort of romantic vampire types.

Imagine my utter disappointment when, after about ten minutes into the show I discovered that it was going to be a huge stinking pile of SUCKAGE.

Gawd.

First of all, when did everyone in Los Angeles suddenly begin to speak with really bad Romanian accents? I mean, from the newscaster to the college professor. Was there a west coast Romanian invasion that I'm unaware of? Then.. you have the main character, Mick St. John (played by Australian actor Alex O'Loughlin) who I realize is supposed to be all dark and angsty, but could you show A FREAKIN' EMOTION??? I mean.. his facial expression changed ONCE when he bared his fangs. He looked like he was fighting his way out of a coma.

The secondary main character, Beth Turner (played by actress Sophia Myles) wanders around uttering her lines with this stunned deer in the headlights look. I mean seriously.. in one scene she's slouching in the front seat of a car after being drugged and her facial expression is the same as the hilarious hugging scene at the end.

The hugging scene. There have been emails and instant messages galore over how pathetically contrived that seemed.

I don't know what the deal is, I've seen Sophia Myles in other roles and enjoyed her performances in the past. I think part of the problem is that you have an Aussie trying to sound like he's not, a Brit trying to sound American and a bunch of Americans trying to sound Romanian. Everyone's concentrating so hard on trying to cover their accents that they forget to act.

It's going to take some serious acting ability to compensate for the writing on this one.

I'm hoping.. praying.. that this is just "episode one" jitters, that they work out the bugs as they go along. I want it to do well.. but I don't have a lot of faith in it at this point.

At least the Amazon and I got a few laughs out of it, especially when we heard the first notes of Evanescence's "My Immortal" beginning to play. My eyes rolled back in my head and I laughed as the Amazon exclaimed, "Oh my GAWD I so saw that coming!!!!"

If you want a good vamp show, you really can't beat Angel. Or Buffy for that matter!
